Insurance-Recommended Body Shops and Owner Choice
An insurer can recommend a repair facility, but Louisiana law says it cannot require motor-vehicle repairs at a particular shop and must explain that the recommendation is not obligatory. Choosing a shop does not independently settle every payment question.

Do I have to use an insurer’s recommended body shop?
An insurer can recommend a repair facility, but Louisiana law says it cannot require motor-vehicle repairs at a particular shop and must explain that the recommendation is not obligatory. Choosing a shop does not independently settle every payment question.
Compare how a shop documents damage, explains procedures and communicates changes. Tell the insurer which shop you select and clarify the claim’s next steps. Separate the shop-choice decision from policy coverage, deductibles and authorization so expectations stay clear.
How This Fits Into the Repair Plan
Record the chosen facility and distinguish the recommendation from the actual receiving agreement. Clarify any earlier authorization and compare supported operations separately from claim-payment questions.

Understand what is being recommended
An insurer may recommend a repair service or network, but the recommendation should be distinguished from your selection and the actual claim decision. Louisiana Department of Insurance guidance explains the owner’s ability to choose a repair facility. Ask what arrangement is proposed instead of treating a recommendation as the entire repair agreement.
Ask whether the conversation concerns an estimate, an arranged arrival or a repair proposal. These are different steps. A recommended name does not establish every component, method or required operation for the actual vehicle.
If you compare the recommended shop with another facility, use the detailed scope as well as practical receiving arrangements. Similar totals or a shared insurer relationship do not independently establish identical work.
Share the vehicle identity, damage area and known concerns with the chosen team. Confirm appropriate transport if the condition is uncertain. A recommendation or map address does not establish safe driving or acceptance of an unattended drop-off.

Compare the supported operations
Ask which findings are confirmed and which remain provisional. Concealed damage, component identity and applicable requirements can need further access or research. A preliminary insurer document should not silently be treated as the final technical plan for every question.
Compare actual components, methods and related operations. Access, attachments, protection, finish and relevant verification can affect scope where they apply. A main-part price alone is not the completed installed repair.
If the proposed work changes, request the dated revision and the finding or requirement behind it. Ask whether the change concerns a component, method, fitted system or check. Keep that explanation with the current estimate.
An insurer’s review and the shop’s technical proposal have different purposes. Ask each party what decision it is making and what remains open. A network label should not replace a component-level explanation or establish every payment responsibility.
Keep the owner’s arrangement clear
Confirm which facility is expecting the vehicle, what assessment or work is authorized and what next update is planned. An insurer recommendation, estimate request and vehicle arrival should not be treated as interchangeable confirmations.
If you have already agreed to work elsewhere, clarify completed work, parts, earlier authorization and applicable transfer terms before changing the facility arrangement.
For an insurance-rights or claim-review concern, use current Louisiana Department of Insurance resources and keep relevant communication. Ask about the actual policy and decision rather than assuming one general recommendation rule settles every dispute.
Boudreaux’s can discuss the actual vehicle and supported repair plan at New Orleans or Luling. Keep the current estimate version and receiving instructions together. At completion, ask which relevant records explain the actual work rather than relying only on a network or recommendation label.
